I have returned a couch. Twice. Same couch, two different times, because I convinced myself the second delivery would somehow look different in my living room than the first one did.
It didn’t. That’s the level of decision fatigue home decor can create in a person, and it’s exactly why FurnishingInsights exists.
I’m Olivia, and I’ve spent the better part of a decade helping people furnish rooms they actually have to live in, not rooms built for a magazine spread.
Why Decor, Of All Things
Before this site, I worked in visual merchandising for a mid-size furniture retailer, the kind with a floor plan that changes every season and a manager who wants every vignette to sell a lifestyle in eight seconds flat.
I learned how to make a cramped studio apartment mockup look spacious using nothing but rug placement and one well-angled mirror. I also learned how many customers walked in overwhelmed, stood in front of a wall of paint swatches, and left without buying anything at all.
That gap between wanting a nice home and knowing how to get there stuck with me. So in 2023 I started writing down what I knew, one post at a time, from a laptop balanced on a folding table that was, ironically, the ugliest piece of furniture I owned for two full years.
What I Actually Believe About a Home
A room doesn’t have to be finished to be right. I’d rather show you a half-decorated space that works than a staged photo that falls apart the second real life moves in. Budget matters more than trend. And if a tip only works for people with unlimited square footage, it’s not a tip, it’s a fantasy.
A Few Specifics About Me
I own four different shades of white paint samples on my hallway wall right now, because I still haven’t picked one, eighteen months into living here.
I keep a shoebox of fabric swatches organized by room, not by color, which drives my partner slightly insane.
And I’ve moved apartments six times in the last five years, which means I’ve had to solve the “this doesn’t fit through the door” problem more times than I’d like to admit.
Who I’m Writing This For
If you’re renting and can’t paint the walls, if you inherited furniture you don’t love but can’t afford to replace yet, or if you just want your living room to stop looking like it’s mid-move even though you moved in two years ago, you’re who this site is for.
I’m not writing for people with unlimited budgets and empty houses. I’m writing for people squeezing good design out of real constraints.
How This Site Actually Gets Made
Every article on FurnishingInsights gets checked for accuracy before it goes anywhere near publish, whether that’s a product dimension, a price, or a claim about how a material holds up over time.
I read through everything myself before it’s live, and I go back through older posts regularly to update anything that’s changed, a discontinued product, a shifted price, a trend that’s aged out.
